There is no such thing as a typical day for Ross Munro. As Training Manager at Exilux, he is the person people turn to when the questions get difficult, the standards get complex, or something simply does not look quite right.
With nearly 20 years in lighting and emergency lighting, Ross has built a reputation as a trusted source of knowledge across the business and beyond. His role spans everything from British standards training and CPD sessions to supporting both sales and project teams with the detail that keeps projects compliant and on track. In simple terms, if it involves how a system works, how it should be designed, or whether it meets the required standards, Ross is usually involved.
From sports engineering to emergency lighting
His route into the industry was not planned. After studying sports engineering, Ross found himself at a crossroads and stepped into sales through a demanding recruitment process that ended in a four hour, Dragon’s Den style interview. That moment set the direction for a career that would grow through curiosity, persistence, and a willingness to learn from the ground up.
Building technical expertise
From early roles where learning meant figuring things out from scratch, through to positions across emergency lighting and wider commercial lighting, Ross developed a strong technical foundation alongside a sharp eye for detail. Formal qualifications followed, including Lighting Industry Association certifications where he achieved marks of distinction, and progression to full membership of the Society of Light and Lighting. More recently, he stepped into the role of Regional Representative for Scotland, recognised with an award for his contribution to the industry.
Solving complex challenges
What sets Ross apart is not just experience, but how he approaches it. He is methodical, analytical, and calm under pressure. He prefers facts over opinion, clarity over guesswork, and believes strongly that good service is about answering the questions others cannot, or asking the ones that have not yet been considered. It is this mindset that allows him to save clients time, reduce risk, and bring confidence to complex projects.
A commitment to continuous learning
He is also a firm believer that learning never stops. His personal philosophy is simple. If you are the smartest person in the room, you are probably in the wrong room. That mindset keeps him engaged, always building on what he knows, and sharing it with others across the industry.
The details others miss
That attention to detail shows up in unexpected ways. Ross admits he cannot walk through a building without checking the lighting, particularly emergency signage. His phone is full of photos of misplaced or incorrect exit signs spotted along the way. It is not just habit, it is a reflection of how seriously he takes getting things right. He even found genuine enjoyment in discovering that the well known “little green man” has a defined RAL colour, Signal Green 6032. For Ross, those details matter.
Beyond the technical side, Ross is approachable, even tempered, and known for bringing humour into the workplace. Practical jokes are part of the package, often at the expense of long time colleagues, helping to keep things grounded in what can sometimes be a highly technical field.
Championing inclusive design
He is also passionate about an area he feels is often overlooked, designing lighting with visual impairment in mind. As buildings become more inclusive in other ways, Ross believes emergency lighting should follow the same path, supporting people with reduced vision and creating environments that work for everyone.

Outside of work, life is centred around family and football, usually watching Celtic, along with spending time with his two children. The same attention to detail might follow him, but thankfully, not every outing turns into a lighting inspection.
