Self-contained emergency luminaires contain their own battery, charger, and control gear within each fitting, creating a system of independent luminaires. A fault or failure in one unit does not affect the emergency operation of the others.
Self-contained systems can support centralised testing and reporting. Wired solutions require a control cable to be routed back to a central unit, but do not require fire-rated cabling, while wireless solutions require no additional communication cabling. Maintenance of batteries and luminaires is carried out at the point of use.
Central power emergency lighting systems locate the battery, charger, inverter and test facility within a dedicated central battery unit. Emergency luminaires are supplied from this central source via fire-rated distribution cabling.
This approach allows both testing and maintenance of most key system components to be carried out centrally, with luminaires acting primarily as light sources. Central power systems are typically used in larger or more complex buildings, where centralised battery maintenance and longer battery service life provide operational advantages.
